114th Stewardson Memorial Competition
Separation - Connection - Interaction
Located on the border of Mitte and Teirgarden, the interventions site acts as a literal boundary between two section of Berlin. Its rich history includes moments of unprecedented isolation as well as moments of celebration and unity, all caused by boundaries imposed on the people.
Interaction examines how experience can be manipulated through boundaries, both physical and psychological, to connect and promote or separate and prevent interaction. As the site is crossed, a variety of experiential moments are encountered. The types of space created by these boundaries include; reflective space to focus on oneself or on the community, connective space to bring together neighbors to create a sense of community, and transformative space to uplift, inspire and engage.
The sites’ main features are a series of gathering and reflective spaces of multiple scales and emotions, a public garden/urban farm to foster community, and a “pop-up” space which changes as the time does. Pop-up beer gardens, art exhibitions, farmers markets and movie screenings are all programmatic elements that one might encounter on any random day throughout the year.
